sociology for his groundbreaking work in social theory, methodology, and substantive areas such as suicide, religion, and labor. In the following selection from his first book, The Division of Labor in Society, Durkheim explores the notion of social solidarity, that is, how individuals and society are bound together. Durkheim asserts that modern societies maintain their cohesion through dependencies brought about by the division of labor, not the sameness of responsibilities and tasks found in traditional societies. Law is different in each of these societies as well, as traditional societies governed by mechanical solidarity rely on repressive law, while modern societies with organic solidarity are characterized by restitutive law.
